In the picture there is a mature American girl who weans traditional Chinese costume

May 31st, 2010    by Landon

Her bright smile perfectly matches to traditional Chinese clothes, hut. necklace, etc. . all of which seem to belong to a Chinese minority. In such a simple way. the design c the picture managed to reflect rapidly growing exchanges between different cultures, especially between the Chinese and the western cultures.

Most people would attach great importance to this phenomenon, They believe that exchanges between these two distinguished culture: will lead to better understanding between China and the western world, which will inevitably bring tremendous changes to our future world. There is no doubt that with better understanding things like confrontation, conflicts and wars can be avoided and that the blend of different cultures will lead to lasting peace and prosperity of the world.

As a college student, I firmly believe that globalization is the tendency of today's world and there is nothing that can hold it back. The ideas that western cultures would be a threat to the traditional Chinese cultures and they would be abandoned gradually have been out of date. What we ought to think seriously about is probably not whether this kind of blend is needed or not, but what we could do in order to let this process make positive contributions to the development of the Chinese cultures, and how we can make the traditional Chinese culture known to the world and be accepted by the world. That is the very idea that the designer of the picture wants to tell us. It is probable that only in this way will the balance of exchanges be kept and both sides benefit from this process of globalization.

An Epidemiological Survey on Relationship Between Drinking Tea and Blood Pressure

May 29th, 2010    by Landon

Aim Analyse the relationship between drinking tea a blood pressure. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted the natural population of 532 local male peasants who were aged or more in April 1994 in a tea-area of Jiangsu Province. Results 1 mean blood pressure of the people with the habit of drinking tea v significantly higher than that of the subjects without drinking. 1 correlation coefficients between the amount of tea drinking and S or DBF were apparently significant. The stepwise regression annals showed that the amount of tea drinking had a significant effect SBP and DBF after controlling the factors such as age and body m index (BMI). Conclusion Drinking tea was an influential factor blood pressure.

People are either happier or unhappier

May 28th, 2010    by Landon

I'm usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes; increasing physical isolation — brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things — and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Given that we can't turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.

At the top of the list is nurturing a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.

To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtual violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.

Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.

Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.

The Old Man and the Sea

May 27th, 2010    by Landon

The shark closed fast astern and when he hit the fish the old man saw his mouth open and his strange eyes and the clicking chop of the teeth as he drove forward in the meat just above the tail. The shark's head was out of water and his back was coming out and the old man could hear the noise of skin and flesh ripping on the big fish when he rammed the harpoon down onto the shark's head at a spot where the line between his eyes intersected with the line that ran straight back from his nose. ' There were no such lines. There was only the heavy sharp blue head and the big eyes and the clicking , thrusting , all-swallowing jaws. But that was the location of the brain and the old man hit it. He hit it with his blood mushed hands driving a good harpoon with all his strength. He hit it without hope but with resolution and complete malignancy.

The shark swung over and the old man saw his eye was not alive and then he swung over once again, wrapping himself in two loops of the rope. The old man knew that he was dead but the shark would not accept it. Then, on his back, with his tail lashing and his jaws clicking, the shark plowed over the water as a speed-boat does. The water was white where his tail beat it and three-quarters of his body was clear above the water when the rope came taut, shivered, and then snapped. The shark lay quietly for a little while on the surface and the old man watched him. Then he went down very slowly.

"But the man is not made from defeat," he said. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated. "

They came. But they did not come as the Mako had come. One turned and went out of sight under the skiff and the old man could feel the skiff shake as he jerked and pulled on the fish. The other watched the old man with his slitted yellow eyes and then came in fast with his half circle of jaws wide to hit the fish where he had already been bitten. The line showed clearly on the top of his brown head and back where the brain joined the spinal cord and the old man drove the knife on the oar into the juncture, withdrew it, and drove it in again into the shark's yellow car-like eyes. The shark let go of the fish and slid down, swallowing what he had taken as he died.

The skiff was still shaking with the destruction the other shark was doing to the fish and the old man let go the sheet so that the skiff would swing broadside and bring the shark out from under. When he saw the shark he leaned over the side and punched at him. He hit only meat and the hide was set hard and he barely got the knife in. The blow hurt not only his hands but his shoulder too. But the shark came up fast and his head out and the old man hit him squarely in the center of his flat-topped head as his nose came out of water and lay against the fish. The old man withdrew the blade and punched the shark exactly in the same spot again. He still hung to the fish with his jaws hooked and the old man stabbed him in his left eye. The shark still hung there. "No?" the old man said and he drove the blade between the vertebra and the brain. It was an easy shot now and he felt the cartilage sever. The old man reversed the oar and put the blade between the shark's jaws to open them. He twisted the blade and as the shark slid loose he said "Go on, galano. Slide down a mile deep. Go see your friend, or maybe it's your mother. "

The Song of the River

May 26th, 2010    by Landon

You hear it all along the river. You hear it, loud and strong, from the rowers as they urge the junk with its high stem, the mast lashed alongside, down the swift running stream. You hear it from the trackers, a more breathless chant, as they pull desperately against the current, half a dozen of them perhaps if they are taking up a wupan m, a couple of hundred if they are hauling a splendid junk, its square sail[z] set, over a rapid. On the junk a man stands amidships beating a drum incessantly to guide their efforts, and they pull with all their strength, like men possessedP1, bent double; and sometimes in the extremity of their travail they crawl on the ground, on all fours, like the beasts of the field. They strain, strain fiercely, against the pitiless might of the stream. The leader goes up and down the line and when he sees one who is not putting all his will into the task he brings down his split bamboo on the naked back. Each one must do his utmost or the labour of all is vain. And still they sing a vehement, eager chant, the chant of the turbulent waters. I do not know how words can describe what there is in it of effort. It serves to express the straining heart, the breaking muscles, and at the same time the indomitable spirit of man which overcomes the pitiless force of nature. Though the rope may part and the great junk swing back, in the end the rapid will be passed; and at the close of the weary day there is the hearty meal...

But the most agonising song is the song of the coolies who bring the great bales from the junk up the steep steps to the town wall. Up and down they go, endlessly, and endless as their toil rises their rhythmic cry. '21 He, aw-ah, oh. They are barefoot and naked to the waist. The sweat pours down their faces and their song is a groan of pain. It is a sigh of despair. It is heart-rending. It is hardly human. It is the cry of souls in infinite distress, only just musical , and that last note is the ultimate sob of humanity. Life is too hard, too cruel, and this is the final despairing protest. That is the song of the river.

Expansion and Contraction

May 25th, 2010    by Landon

The expansion and contraction which most substances undergo on changing temperature is familiar to us all. Expansion-contraction is one of the basic form of motion, as Engels said: "Hence the basic form of all motion is ap-proximation1 and separation, contraction and expansion—in short, the old polar opposites of attraction and repulsion. " So a knowledge of this is very important, especially in some branches of structure engineering. Since all materials are subjected to expansion and contraction, "expansion joints" must be provided in any large structure to adapt to the change of temperature with the season, or even with day and night, otherwise the force of expansion could cause the structure to bend or break. We have observed that an increase in the temperature of a volume of gas produces an increase in the internal pressure within the gas. This is resulted from the increased movement of the gas molecules. The higher the internal pressure, the greater the tendency for the gas to expand. This phenomenon may well be illustrated with a heated balloon. On the other hand, if the temperature of the gas is decreased, the gas will tend to contract.

Liquids expand and contract as gases do. Since liquids are generally kept in some kind of rigid container, the expansion takes place at the upper surface only, so that the level of the liquid rises as its temperature is increased and falls with a decrease in temperature. A common example of this effect is the thermometer. However, if a sealed container fully filled with a liquid is heated, expansion will take place. The expansion may be so great that it will crack the container, because a liquid is not so compressible as a gas, and the heat supplied creates a great pressure.

As a general rule, solids can expand and contract too. But the coefficients2 of expansion and contraction of solids are on the whole smaller than those of liquids. However, for practical pur¬ poses it is usually necessary to know only one dimension of a solid will vary with temperature changes. This one-dimensional variation is called linear3 expansion or contraction of the solid as the case may be and is expressed as the percentage change in its length for one degree change in temperature.

It is normal and acceptable that "the average annual earnings of high school dropouts are significantly less than the average annual earnings of high school graduates. "

May 24th, 2010    by Landon

The state governor is, therefore, not addressing a worthwhile "problem," and his proposal, when carried out, has to be futile and may bring out genuine problems as are pointed out in the newsletter.

Nowadays dropping out of high school is no longer something worthy of our sympathy, as it used to be in the past when children had to leave school due to such misfortune as poverty. This is especially true in societies where education of the young is earnestly advocated and generously aided by the state. Thus, whenever a child is considering or has shown signs of dropping out of school, he never can escape from such free advice and warning that his "average annual earnings" will be "significantly less than the average annual earnings of high school graduates. " In this way, every case of dropping out is the result of turning a deaf ear to such advice and warning, and an action out of one's free choice or sheer folly. And this explains why dropouts are from both worse-off and better-off families. It is no use, then, trying to help high school dropouts when they are earning less money, a prospect they were well aware of when they were making their decisions to drop out.

Also, it is all a question whether these dropouts will respond positively to these free vocational training pro-grams. For me, I would rather believe that they won't. First, by going against their parents' advice and warning intended to profit not only their schooling but also their vocation, these people have already impressed us as people who do not much care for a job. Second, if it is uninteresting to attend high school, these vocational training programs may be just as boring to them.

Further, these free programs, at the cost of the taxpayers, may turn out to be problematic. High school education has been planned and given in such a way that it provides students with basic knowledge and skills that are essential to all vocations. By giving free vocational training programs to high school dropouts so as to help them receive larger " average annual earnings," the governor may give the public, especially high school students, this false idea; there are training programs that are " free" and lead to vocational skills all the same. This falsehood, even if it will not mislead the sound-minded high school students, is likely to "encourage" the potential dropouts to virtually drop out, and may therefore "lower, not raise, the average earning potential of young people. " To make things worse, it can cause a general confusion among students and their parents about the role of high schools, and can therefore be fatal to education in this state.

For these reasons I agree to what is suggested in the newsletter; drop the programs the state governor is busy with, and improve education in such a way that our high schools will not only give better academic programs but also report less dropouts.

Christmas- Time

May 21st, 2010    by Landon

It is marvelous that everyone looks forward to Christmas time with delight. No doubt many of the pleasant anticipations in connection with it are caused by the good cheer which is provided in our homes at that gladsome season.

At school we have a vacation, and everybody, even the businessmen who can hardly ever get away from their duties, manage to have a day or two off. The scattered members of each family return home for a reunion. The joyous season bring balls and social parties for people. Every house is bright and cheerful with decorations and Christmas trees laden with gifts.

This is also the time for skiing and skating if the weather should be favorable. If you glide along in the sharp, frosty air, the motion makes the blood tingle in your veins, and gives you a feeling of pleasure that no other exercises are capable of affording. Moreover, the landscape itself is pretty, covered by pure white snow.

Formal or Informal: Hierarchical or Horizontal

May 20th, 2010    by Landon

In some cultures, a manager has reached that position through hard work and the status is important. Therefore, managers employ a formal writing style that emphasizes power distance and authority. Formality stresses the hierarchy of the organization and manager's superior status in that hierarchy. Paradoxically, the hierarchy reinforces social harmony by reducing uncertainty about status. Subordinates expect managers to use \ a formal style; not to do so is to risk losing the respect of the lower ranks. The subordinates want to be confident their manager is indeed firmly fixed above them, being accountable on their behalf and looking out for their best interests. This style lends itself to quick decisions, since subordinates are not likely to question them.

Memos written from managers in these hierarchical cultures — Arab, African, Asian — sound authoritarian to members of horizontal cultures that emphasize equality. Horizontal cultures — English-speaking cultures and cultures from Northern Europe — give more priority to the equal status of employees. Their style is inclusive, and they play down the power distance between manager and subordinate. Indeed, the power distance may be slight, and the manager's authority may rest on the willingness of the subordinates to acknowledge it. This style tends to be less efficient than the authoritative style. If everyone has a valid voice and can contribute feedback in two-way communication, issues can take a long time to discuss.

Business communication textbooks from the United States instruct memo writers to adopt a friendly tone and an informal style in order to get the most cooperation from readers. When an issue is serious, formality indicates a writer's commitment to the issue rather than to friendly relations.

Subordinates in North American organizations try to develop sensitive antennas about style of communication with superiors. Generally, they equate formality with distance and informality with greater friendliness. But formally or informally, employees in these organizations welcome the opportunity to express their views and make their wishes known. A common complaint from employees is that management doesn't listen to or care about their concerns; the assumption is that management should care.

Managers who want feedback from subordinates may have difficulties, however, when subordinates are accustomed to treating managers as authorities who do not make decisions based on subordinates' wishes. The notion of two-way communication may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Employees may wonder why managers ask them for in-formation; they may suspect managers have hidden purposes for it.

When communication is structured with little flexibility for feedback or another response or for other channels of communication, in other directions, a grapevine communication system develops. In contrast to the official, formal system, the grapevine is informal. The more rigid the structured system, the more the informal system flourishes. Studies indicate that the grapevine has more credibility than the official communication network and is often more accurate (see also Chapter Eight).

You can see a flourishing informal network in organizations that have a hierarchical culture; the informal system usually involves someone in the office of the most powerful person and also involves people who have access to more than one department or location in the organization. The same is true in a general culture where the system is naturally more complex. Chapter Eight deals with the nature of information in detail, but here it is appropriate to point out that the informal information network may be the one' you need to pay attention to in an unfamiliar culture.
